What is M.O.M
M.O.M stands for Mission of Mercy: A two day free dental clinic for approximately 1000 adults who could not otherwise afford dental care.
The program was started by Dr. Terry Dickinson, Executive Director of the Virginia Dental Association in 2000. Since that time, the project has grown enormously and now M.O.M projects are held throughout Virginia and across the country. To see a video of an actual event click here.
All M.O.M services are provided by volunteers and every event requires a variety of volunteers including: dental professionals (dentists, dental assistants, hygienists, and dental students), medical professionals, and community volunteers who assist with set-up and clean-up, volunteer registration, translation, parking and helping patients through the process.
With only 42 practicing general dentists and a growing population of 165,000+, the Eastern Panhandle has less than half the dentists needed to adequately serve the public.
The closest community health center that provides dental services on a sliding scale is located 90 miles away from Martinsburg.
A survey conducted in 2003 by the West Virginia Bureau of Health indicated that there were over 10,000 Medicaid eligible children without a dentist. With those figures in mind, there are reasonably a similar number of adults also without dental care.
